If your child has myopia and needs treatment, we are here to help. Although myopia is an irreversible condition, it can be treated to help prevent progression. Before you visit us, we invite you to keep reading to find out about the importance of myopia control.
The term “myopia” simply refers to “nearsightedness.” When you are nearsighted, you may have a hard time seeing objects that are farther away. Myopia can progress and if it is not treated in time, it can contribute to other conditions and diseases.
While the condition cannot be fully cured, there are some treatment options. Our optometrists often recommend eye drops, Ortho-K, multifocal contacts, and multifocal glasses to help with correcting your child’s vision. Ortho-K lenses may also be able to slow down the progression of myopia, as they temporarily change the shape of the cornea. For kids who tolerate eye drops well, we may also suggest specific eye drops to help with slowing down progression.
Myopia may not always be preventable, but you can take some precautions you can take. Regular eye exams can help with early detection and provide prompt treatment to prevent the condition from worsening. You should limit screen time since bright light increase the chances of myopia and encourage your child to spend more time outside.
To schedule an eye exam or learn more about our services, contact Shippee Family Eye Care, P.C., which serves Lancaster, NH, Littleton, NH, Montpellier, VT, and St. Johnsbury, VT.
